The Refinement of Souls | Ahmad ibn ‘Ata’ Illah al-Sakandari

The Refinement of Souls is a translation of Imam ibn Ata Allah Sakandari's, may Allah be pleased with him, Taj al-Arus al-Hawi li Tahdhib al-Nufus. It is a concise manual consisting of spiritual instructions, aphorisms and private discourses.

The author has included numerous references to the Qur'an and Sunnah, as well as illuminating stories and similitudes, in the course of explaining religious themes such as repentance, the effects of sin, the nature of the struggle against the lower self, envy, reliance on divine planning and many others.

Divine Love, Longing, Intimacy, and Contentment

Based on Book Thirty-six of Imām al-Ghazālī’s Revival of the Islamic Sciences on Love, Longing, Intimacy and Contentment, this class will explore the pivotal role of divine love in Islam. Imām al-Ghazālī establishes the necessity of the love between God and man and argues that the virtues and spiritual stages that precede love, like repentance, patience and gratitude, engender love, while the spiritual stages that follow from love, like longing and contentment, result from it. Beginning with the discussion of love in the Qur’an, Sunna, and the precepts of the lovers, we will explore the meaning of man’s love for God, and God’s love for man. We will study the causes of love that al-Ghazālī outlines, and which he uses to demonstrate that God is the only truly object truly worthy of our love. We will also study some of the fruits of love, namely longing, intimacy, and contentment. Finally, we will supplement our discussion by considering what it means to love others for the sake of God, which Imām al-Ghazālī outlines in Book Fifteen on The Ethics of Companionship.

Imām al-Ghazālī’s Book Thirty-six on Divine Love, Longing, Intimacy and Contentment has been translated into English and published by The Islamic Texts Society. The translation is excellent and can be found on the ITS website or on Amazon. It is encouraged (though optional) to purchase the book for both preparation and for use during class. For preparation, we recommend starting with Imām al-Ghazālī’s Introduction to the Iḥyā’ (pp. VII-XVI) and the translator’s Introduction (pp. XXI-XLII).

Marvels of the Qur'an | Seven Keys to Unlock Seventy Meanings

"Do they not reflect deeply on the Qur'an, or have hearts locked themselves out?" (47:24). This seminar will cover various approaches to tadabbur, that divine invitation to contemplate the layered meanings. Every verse in the Book of Allah withholds seventy meanings according to `Abd Allah b. `Abbas, yet there is a key to open every door of meaning, allowing locked hearts to, ultimately, mirror their own reflections on the Word of God.
